BOWMAN WAS STILL smiling as he pushed through the front door and headed for his truck. He couldn’t pin down what he was feeling. It was happiness, but with something like trepidation. It’d been fun talking with Maisy, Jet and Clara. He was glad Maisy was willing to let his sister set her up with a few guys. It meant she wanted to stay in Outcrop. That was good. He wanted her here.

But something about the whole exchange felt weird, too.

Bowman shrugged off the feeling. Maisy was complicated, and while he didn’t want Clara to send her out with a bunch of guys who didn’t get her, he also knew his sisters were incredibly good at what they did. So good that he’d resisted every attempt they made to set him up. He wanted to find someone on his own, someone who liked him for who he was, and wouldn’t try to change him. He knew himself—he wasn’t social, could be focused to a fault and truly didn’t care what other people said about him.

Except for one person. Maisy thought he was too reckless, and he found himself wanting to change that opinion.

He glanced back into the restaurant, where Maisy and Clara were still in the booth. Reckless wasn’t the right word. He knew when he was in danger and took risks based on potential reward. He didn’t plot it all out with charts and graphs the way some people did, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t aware of what he was doing.

It didn’t matter. Maisy wasn’t here in Outcrop to understand him. She was here to get her loans paid back and start her career as a doctor. He pulled out his phone and looked at the picture he’d snapped of the rubric again. He grinned to himself. They were gonna crush this.

It had taken quite a bit of time to shift through the language and figure out what the Healthy Lives Institute actually wanted out of this camp, but he’d done it. Maisy hadn’t been too far off the mark at all. In fact, were Linda Sands to be there all day on any given day, Maisy would get top scores in every category without his help. But since they didn’t know when Sands would show up next, they needed to be ready to hit all the points on the rubric when she did arrive.

Over the weekend, he’d write up the plan so they could pivot at any given moment and nail the rubric. That way Maisy wouldn’t have to worry.

“Wallace.”

Bowman tucked the phone in his pocket and looked up. The fire chief was standing directly in his path. He paused, waiting for his body to react, to get angry. But he didn’t feel anything particularly strong. He still felt good.

“Hey, Josh.”

Josh Hanson was a steady, reasonable guy. If he was fazed by how rude Bowman had been the last time they spoke, he wouldn’t say anything. “How’s it going?”

“Great.” Bowman was as surprised by the word when it came out of his mouth as Josh seemed to be.
